Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by her aunt Denise when she was a child. Her aunt was a nurse who did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her day to art literature and theatre. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay discovered through experience that art is a great vehicle to engage in social activism. DuVernay's mother also had a the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay how to convey messages through art. DuVernay was a resident of Compton for most of her youth, however she spent every summer in the company of her extended family members living in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historical Civil Rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer and was motivated to make a documentary about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her high school diploma in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles where she received degrees in English and African American studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for broadcast journalism as a student. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to examine the garbage inside the house of a member on the jury. In the course of her work she was dissatisfied with journalism and moved into the business of publicity. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a Junior Publicist shortly after graduating from college. She was promoted to the position and set up her own PR company known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency developed several lifestyle websites such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
